Mass Murder: The Cowardliness Of Soft Minded Men
Posted by Alexander Marquez on April 19, 2009I looked out my window today and saw nothing but darkness, seeing as the sun had faded from the stratosphere and the beginning of a cold winter night had begun. Yes, this darkness is fully symbolic, representing what my sad eyes read today.
I read about a man who murdered his wife and three children before killing himself. Christopher wood was his name, a 34 year old man who in his suicide note stated that he suffered from money troubles and psychological issues. He shot and slashed some of them before ending his own life with a shotgun.
They had just moved a few months back to Maryland from Florida. His wife’s father had become suspicious and broke into the home, discovering the bodies.
Sad, but this horrendous economy claims 5 more victims, four of them innocent and one of them deranged. It is almost as if we have to wait and see which one of us is still standing after all is said and done in these volatile times.
There are simply no excuses for what happened here. The alternative cannot be worse that what occurred. We have to keep our focus and we must stay sane even in the worst of circumstances.
I believe that this man had no hope and that him killing himself cannot be seen as a surprise. However, him deciding to also kill his family is and evil act of cruelty that provokes me to vomit.
Our families must be the last sacred thing that keeps us motivated to keep going even if we face issues such as job loss or other bad news. Yet for this man, not even this could be his salvation, for his mind resided in oblivion.
So, how many more will fall victims to the harshest times our country has faced in 80 years? You, me, who? This economic Apocalypse swallows whole even the brightest individuals, as the darkness of the times consumes us without mercy.
Sure, this horror will come to an end but not before we hear about more stories like this one. The human mind is one strange, abstract device that cannot be predicted.
According to neighbors, the child victims where happy little kids like many others but little did they realize their end would come so soon. They were teased, brought to this world and given the amazing opportunity to live on this planet only to be taken from it as they were beginning this beautiful journey.
For this, I say there can be no forgiveness for this man, the face of uncontrollable evil. He failed his wife, his children, and us as a society. If there is life outside of this planet, we have just given them a glimpse as to the darkness we can hide inside.
This is not who we are and this is not who we must be. It doesn’t matter how difficult our circumstances get, we must find a way to thrive and reach for higher ground. In the words of the great Martin Luther King Jr. “A nation or civilization that continues to produce soft minded men purchases its own spiritual death on the installment plan”. Enough said.
