Denuclearization Is Just A Dream
Posted by Alexander Marquez on July 17, 2009| Is what President Obama wants even possible? He envisions a world without nuclear weapons, and judging by the new agreement reached between the United States and Russia to reduce the number of nuclear weapons both countries currently have, his plans would appear to be off to a good start.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was created in 1968 to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and President Obama and his team are fully committed to uphold its spirit and continue on this fight until the Earth is free of nuclear weapons. However, it is difficult to imagine this happening when we have countries such as North Korea and Iran determined to |
create their own nuclear weapons. How do we convince these closed minded nations that reducing nuclear weapons is in the best interest of humanity? These countries are both run by radicals who want no resolution, but, instead, want to advance their malicious ambitions. On the matter of denuclearization, it is amazing to observe the drastic change between the administration of Barack Obama and the one of George W. Bush. If you recall, the former President actually believed that more nuclear weapons was the answer. Because of this, it is stunning to listen to what President Obama’s goals are, and it makes you wonder how two human beings can be so divided on the same issue.
However, there is an issue that is truly frightening. Though I mostly support President Obama, there is the risk that because of our unwillingness to continue to advance our nuclear programs, other countries my be passing us in this imaginary ladder of nuclear strength. After all, nuclear weapons where supposed to provide a deterrence to other countries who eyed the possibility of attacking us. So, as Iran and North Korea, and even Russia and China, continue to strengthen and advance their nuclear programs, we are stalling. Unfortunately, we might be headed toward a world that no longer fears our powers, and I don’t believe this can make us safer in any manner.
This, perhaps, is the very first serious disagreement I have with President Obama’s policies. The prospect of us eliminating nuclear weapons scares me, and I can only hope this is a promise Barack Obama doesn’t keep. So, I have to say what I didn’t think I would say this early in President Obama’s administration: on this idea, he is flat out wrong. We cannot allow any country to gain an edge on us. Can you imagine what would have happened if the only nation that had nuclear weapons during World War 2 was Germany? Or if in this current world, only Iran possessed such weapons?
Let’s face it, as much as we regret our decisions to drop 2 nuclear bombs on Japan, we cannot deny that these bombs served the intended purpose and that, in the long run, they actually saved lives, as shocking as that statement might sound to the average person. Many will disagree with me on that statement, but I’m sticking to it. So, I plea to President Obama to reconsider his position, or we might be at the mercy of Iran in a few years. Denuclearization will lead us to certain doom. The radicals and terrorist of the world will never agree to these plans. Some wonder why these countries shouldn’t be allowed to have nuclear weapons when we have thousands of them? Well, the bold answer is that we are not, and have never been terrorists. Do you hear us talking about wiping nations from the face of the Earth the way Iran has talked regarding Israel? Say no to denuclearization if you really love this planet, and send your pleas to the government to focus on strengthening our nuclear program. Our future is at stake.
