The Plight Of The Hungry
Posted by Alexander Marquez on July 9, 2009| This is yet another reminder of why we can’t just live our lives without thinking about the rest of the world. Sure, most of us are blessed with enough food to eat and take issues like this for granted, but the reality is that many are still dying of hunger around the world. We must never forget those who are less fortunate than us because we must remember that they are made of the same flesh and bones that we are made of, and they are suffering. Despite the great recession that the United States is experiencing, most Americans have enough |
resources to whether the storm. This is a luxury that many humans in a vast majority of African nations don’t have, and they are forced to watch their brothers and sisters die because of starvation and disease that comes from poor human conditions. This is a call to all to not forget and to cherish every moment of this existence, because things could be worse. It is also a call to all the world leaders to unite and fight for this cause, making it a priority in their agendas. How could we forget that as I type this thousands are dying of starvation, even in our own U.S. border? There is a reason so many want to get into this country, for in their countries there is little hope. Perhaps they are just looking for a meal to keep on living.
Though it seems there is very little we can do, we can however pressure our world leaders in whatever country we live to make this an issue of priority. If our congressmen and women and President realize that there is an outpouring of concern, perhaps they will feel forced to move and use their considerable influences to bring true change. Together we can move this human ship in the right direction, for we must always remember that we are truly one species and that we all depend on each other if we are to survive in this changing planet.
I know it is difficult to get off the couch and take a stance, but we must force ourselves to care, if for no other reason, at least to leave a legacy of compassion for our children and future generations. I we ourselves cannot bring forth change, perhaps we can at least force our minds to care and to maintain awareness. Michael Jackson died and the world mourned, which is fine, but it is time for a wake up call. Let’s mourn the world, because there are places where there is nothing to eat, and parents don’t know how long they will see their children alive.
Maybe we will take the time to feed those homeless people we see in the corner of our streets instead of feeling horrified by them. Think about how simple a gesture like that could be. There is a higher purpose to life than simply going about our business and having tunnel vision when it comes to others. Sure, we have an immediate family we must protect, but let’s not forget that the homeless person at the corner of the street is also family in a way, for they are part of the global human family. All I want is for the level of awareness to remain constantly raised at the very least. We will be a better world if we truly care.
