Unsolved Mysteries: The Story Of Glenn Miller

Glenn Miller was a famous bandleader who started having an interest in music at a very young age. By the time he had reached his 30’s he had formed his own music band and had developed his personal, unique sound that set him apart. With the Glenn Miller Orchestra he developed a musical hits that became popular with the audience of the time.
He is distinguished for having participated in the first million selling gold disc in the history of recorded music. However, his career was suddenly interrupted by the start of World War 2, at which point he decided to put his music on hold to provide his services to his country, joining the United States army just after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. His musical talents were not to be ignored though, for once in the Army it was evident he could serve by entertaining the troops with his talents.
So, the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band was formed, and with this band, Glenn Miller would get an opportunity to regularly perform for troops stationed in both Europe and Africa. He experienced a few close calls that threatened his safety, ultimately resulting in his airplanes’ disappearance to never be seen again. Then came the claims of Fred Shaw, who in the 1950’s said that miller’s plane had been accidentally bombed by the Royal Air Force of England, who he was part of, and that he had seen the plane go down.
Though his story was initially questioned, history has showed that this is most likely what happened. The Royal Air Force was supposed to carry out a mission in Germany but the mission was cancelled, and upon their return they were not allowed to land with bombs on the plane, so the routine was to drop them into the English Channel. Unfortunately, the plane that Glenn Miller was on was being operated by a novice who decided to fly under poor weather conditions, and despite the fact that there was an area where he was supposed to fly through to avoid the bombs, he failed to do this and instead flew right under the Royal Air Force planes, causing the plane to go down and ending the life of the band leader.
Despite this, Glenn Miller left a great legacy as an entertainer, and perhaps just as importantly, as a patriot who put his musical career at risk in order to defend the country at a time of war. Because of this, he ended up performing the important mission of lifting the spirits of the U.S. forces at a time when they needed it most. This is the mystery of Glenn Miller, and like his, there are other mysteries that circulate, but we must remember that time releases new light and facts, resulting in many of these unknowns receiving closure. Glenn Miller’s music still resonates in the ears of history, along with the great conflict that defined a generation.
