Judgement Day: The Apocalypse
Posted by Alexander Marquez on June 21, 2009Much has been made about whether the Mayans predicted the end of the world. Countless books have been written regarding the year 2012, the supposed day when the Mayans said doomsday was coming. They claim that December 21, 2012 is the end of winter solstice, the day when the evolutionary cycle concludes. So, if you believe this, then we can expect that there will be a recycling of the Earth and all things will be made new. The world as we know it will come to an end.
Pacal Votan is the name of the Mayan prophet who made stunning predictions about the fate of the human race, warning about the danger of our desire to advance in technology, and thus forgetting our natural state. He used his extensive knowledge of mathematics to predict that in the future, the human race would become disconnected from what is most important, nature itself. There is no denying that his prophecies are absolutely mesmerizing.
But there are others who have talked about the end of our world. We can’t ignore the fact that the Bible speaks extensively about this issue and is filled with symbolic figures that depict the coming Apocalypse as many choose to preach in our time. The apostles asked Jesus about the end of the world. What he described to them was a series of catastrophic events that would signal the coming end. He proceeded to tell them about how there would be wars all over world, “as nation would rise against nation”, and he spoke about famines and earthquakes.
Undoubtedly, the events that he described to them where troublesome, and there are some who will assure you that we in fact are living in those times, for just in the past century we witnessed the two biggest wars the history of the world has ever seen, and there is no denying that huge earthquakes have taken place that have killed countless of people, not to mention diseases that have claimed millions of lives. Jesus also spoke of false prophets that would come in his name and warned his apostles to not allow themselves to be deceived, for they would face great tribulation.
What about the ancient French Astrologer Nostradamus? Some will claim he made many predictions that have come true and that he provided clues as to when the world would end. However, there are also those who criticize him as a farce and that there is no proof that any of his predictions became a reality, but instead, are vague and are based on events that perhaps are inevitable. Whatever side you choose, what can’t be ignored is that he did enough to be constantly mentioned in the conversation about the end of the world.
What what about the scientific approach? What does science have to say about the possible end of the world as we know it? Well, let’s start by examining the one element that is key when it comes to examining what we need for our survival. Such survival is immediately attached to the fate of the sun. Because the total luminosity of the sun is expected to increase, this will lead to a rise in the radiation that will reach the Earth, and this, without a doubt, will spell doom for the Earth.
This, however, will not happen soon, for it is expected to be a process that takes over a span that surpasses 1 billion years. So, you might be tempted to conclude that there is nothing to worry about. Yet, another viewpoint to consider is global warming, which is the increase of the overall temperature found on the Earth’s oceans and surface. We have seen a troublesome increase in this since since las century, and the trend continues without end in sight. There are those who blame humans themselves for causing this phenomenon, as we continue to burn fossil fuel and our persistent practice of deforestation. Volcanic activity has also contributed to this increase, along with changes in the sun.
Carbon dioxide is also something that worries many, for even if we stop our negative activities, this element is something that is basically impossible to control. This is why you don’t have to go far to encounter heated debates across political lines and from people who are on both sides of the issue, with some saying that it is a total fabrication with no merit, while others assure that it is something that must be a primary concern, just as much as fighting terrorism is at the current time. As you can see, there are plenty of angles to explore.
The other fear that arises from global warming it the rising of the oceans. Glaciers are melting as I type this. However, some assert that the rise in sea level is miniscule, and that in certain parts of the world the land is actually rising as well, in which case there would be no effect. There can be no denying though that there is a small chance that it could rise more than expected, for is difficult to predict the way the elements will behave. A few years of rising would have little impact, but a rise that goes on past one century could mean the end of certain portions of the world.
What about the possibility of a pandemic causing the ultimate demise of the human race? The World Health Organization has reached the conclusion that the swine flu can be called a pandemic, for the numbers prove that it qualifies for such declaration. About 60 million Europeans where killed in the 18th century alone because of Small Pox. The Spanish Flu, which took place at the end of World War 1 killed anywhere from 50 to 100 million people worldwide in just a couple of years. The Black Plague killed over 70 million people starting in the 1300’s. Malaria kills over one million people a year.
Aids has been guilty of killing over 25 million people in less than thirty years. Do the math and it has averaged about 1 million a year.Yet, none of these pandemics has led to the end of our civilization. Let’s not leave one issue unmentioned. What about a nuclear apocalypse? Can we destroy ourselves through our stubborn pursuit of nuclear arms? We are faced with defiant regimes such as Iran and North Korea, who claim that them, like the United States, have a right to have nuclear weapons for their protection. Can you imagine what would have happened if Adolf Hitler would have had the chance to use nuclear weapons? I don’t even want to envision that scenario.
One thing that I have found in my study of this issue is that there are so many approaches to the topic about the end of the world that it could cause you to go mad just thinking about all of the possibilities. I do want to leave you with some final thoughts of wisdom though. What is clear is that we as a civilization have to find a way to find connection. We cannot continue to follow this road of division, for there is no doubt in my mind that if we continue the course we are following, we will face certain catastrophe. Let’s not fool ourselves, and let’s not wait for the end of the world to decide to finally make the changes that will make us a better world.
